SAP security note 1971270, “Unauthorized modification of displayed content in BI-BIP-INV, BI-BIP-QB, BI-BIP-BIW”, is a program error note released on June 10, 2014. Below are the symptom and SAP recommended solution.
Description
Symptom
BI-BIP-INV, BI-BIP-QB, BI-BIP-BIW can be abused by an attacker, allowing them to modify displayed application content without authorization, and to potentially obtain authentication information from other legitimate users.
Solution
The issue has been fixed in the following SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise releases:
- SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise BI 4.0 SP6 Patch 12
- SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise BI 4.0 SP7 Patch 10
- SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise BI 4.0 SP8 Patch 6
- SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise BI 4.0 SP9 Patch 1
- SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise BI 4.0 SP10
- SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise BI 4.1 SP04
Reason and prerequisites
Some HTTP URLs within BI-BIP-INV, BI-BIP-QB, BI-BIP-BIW do not sufficiently encode input parameters, resulting in a reflected cross-site scripting issue. A reflected cross-site scripting attack can be used to non-permanently deface or modify displayed content from a website.
Reflected cross-site scripting can be used to steal another user’s authentication information, such as data relating to their current session. An attacker who gains access to this data may use it to impersonate the user and access all information with the same rights as the target user. If an administrator is impersonated, the security of the application may be fully compromised.
